Call for Proposals: Workshop on Comparative Political Development in Post-Soviet Eurasia and the Middle East – Abu Dhabi, UAE

We are pleased to invite proposals from specialists on the Middle East for a forthcoming workshop on Comparative Political Development in Post-Soviet Russia/Eurasia and the Middle East in Abu Dhabi, UAE, on December 8-10, 2014 (Monday-Wednesday) co-sponsored by the George Washington University’s Program on New Approaches to Research and Security in Eurasia (PONARS Eurasia), Project on Middle East Political Science (POMEPS), and the New York University Abu Dhabi Institute. Sessions will be structured around full-length draft working papers or book chapters (all in English). Applicants must hold a PhD or be a PhD degree candidate in political science or a related field.

We invite proposals on topics that are broadly relevant to both Post-Soviet Russia/Eurasia and the Middle East. Themes of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • The political economy of resource-based regimes
  • Patronal politics in post-Soviet Russia/Eurasia and the Middle East
  • The sources and dynamics of popular mobilization and revolutions
  • The aftermath of regime change: institutions, politics, economics
  • International relations of post-Soviet Russia/Eurasia and the Middle East

Papers intended for discussion should be works in progress (not previously published) of approximately 8,000-10,000 words in length. They will not be made publicly available, but will be distributed to other workshop participants. To participate in the workshop, the papers should be submitted in a form ready to distribute for workshop discussion by Monday, November 24 and will receive light (mostly formatting) edits beforehand.

Please submit a 1-paragraph abstract to POMEPS at me_casey@gwu.edu no later than Friday, August 29. Workshop organizers will cover visa, travel, and accommodation expenses for accepted participants. Financial support for the workshop is provided by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the New York University Abu Dhabi Institute.
