The October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and Israel’s devastating war on Gaza which followed have raised profoundly challenging issues for political scientists and other scholars who study the Middle East. The Project on Middle East Political Science invites proposals for short essays (1000-1500 words) from scholars working on the MENA region about the changing conditions for the production and dissemination of knowledge about the Middle East. How have the politics of the conflict impacted scholars of the Middle East, in particular higher education institutions, in academic disciplines, or in the public sphere? What approaches have been challenged or suppressed, and what new avenues for inquiry have been opened up? We invite essays from outside the U.S. context, especially perspectives from Middle Eastern countries and Europe. Please submit a brief proposal (no more than 200 words); we will begin reviewing proposals on February 12, and will consider additional submissions on a rolling basis until February 19; draft submissions are due February 26.
